Beloved Companions has a contract with the City of Winston-Salem (NC) to install six or more chapels in city parks. To date, there are four little pet chapels to visit, and many more planned for the future!
Chapel One: Long Creek Park, Bethania, NC
This rustic little pet chapel is located a moderate one-mile hike from the parking lot. Formerly a 158 acre, 18-hole golf course, Long Creek is now being converted into a low-impact park with very little environmental intrusion. Located to the left and up the hill near the old 6th hole, this chapel was established in a repurposed structure (a converted water cooler station) and is the only chapel that is not fully handicapped accessible.

Chapel 2: Miller Park, Winston-Salem, NC
Local artist and craftsman Jamie Cheshire designed and built this little pet chapel from a blueprint in his head. Well-loved and frequently visited, this double-doored chapel is easily the most popular of the three, due in part to its central location and to the press that followed its installation. To find this chapel, get yourself to Knollwood Street – the section between Queen Street and Hawthorne Road – then turn onto Snyder Gardens Lane, then slowly drive straight into the small parking lot ahead of you. The chapel is between the parking lot and the picnic shelter, on the paved path in a fully accessible location.

Chapel 3: Muddy Creek Trailhead, Winston-Salem, NC
The second Jamie-built chapel is simply elegant. The magnetized door is arched and features a horseshoe handle. Open the door and you’ll usually find dog treats provided by a local chapel caretaker/sponsor as well as poetry, photo, and tributes to the many fine animals who have gone before. To find the chapel, turn off Robinhood Road onto Jefferson Elementary School Lane, then follow the blue paw prints to the small parking lot on the right located near the school’s yellow metal gate. The chapel is located at the trailhead on the paved path, a pebble’s throw from the gravel parking lot, and it’s fully accessible.

They handle the chapels with the care of a newborn baby.

Other little pet chapels are planned for the future.

Chapel 4: Hathaway Park, Winston-Salem, NC
This beauty is the the third Jamie-built chapel and the man knows how. The magnetized door is arched and features a horseshoe handle, very much like the door at the Muddy Creek chapel. Open the door, look up, and meet chapel guardian Kat Man. You’ll also see a few precious vintage children’s books donated by a generous neighbor as well as poetry, photos, and other tributes to the many fine animals our visitors have loved and who are always present in their hearts. To find the chapel, turn off Country Club Road onto Mayfield Road NW, then take a soft left onto Anita Drive. Hathaway Park is just down the road on your left, and the chapel sits in the pines at the bottom end of the parking lot. The photos from March 23, 2023 were taken at the dedication by professional photographer and dear friend Emily Richardson.
